The project supported by the Harald Binder Cultural Enterprises Grant Program (HBCE). The HBCE organization was founded by historian and philanthropist Harald Binder to support interdisciplinary projects in the field of culture, art and education and foster the sustainable development of these areas in Ukraine. The grant program of the HBCE program is held once a year, the amount of the grant may range from 500 to 5000 euro on initiatives that are implemented in Ukraine within defined timeframes. One of the main objectives of HBCE is the support of development of contemporary art institution - Jam Factory Art Center in Lviv.

The aim of the project was fixation, re-thinking and art transformation of post-industrial heritage of Kherson. The project combined practices of art-revitalisation and audience development.

 

In border of the Workshop supported by HBCE 26 artists worked with the topic of post-industrial heritage of Kherson and creates art-works for “Future-in-the-Past Museum” exhibition in former machine-building factory – visual art, wall paintings, site-specific and sound performances, installations, objects, photos and video. Part of participants worked with interviews, texts, old photo and created new narrative for post-industrial space. As the result, 20 artworks demonstrated synergy of several artists and different genres of arts. Art-projects allowed to involve different groups to the process of creation – for example, performances with participation of 60 students-designers or 100 teachers of art schools from different regions of Ukraine.

5 opened lectures helped to create new vision of post-industrial spaces. The topics of lectures were creative public spaces, collective memory, communication through the art, re-thinking of post-industrial heritage. Team of urban activists from Kryvyi Rih joined the project with their experience of industrial tourism development.

 

The project resulted with intellectual and material results. The material result is creation of bright practical case of fixation, re-thinking and art transformation of post-industrial heritage of Kherson.

The exhibition in former factory attracted more than 1000 visitors. Catalogues of the exhibition with description of art-works was developed and shared. Nearly 200 visitors joined our guided tours on “Future-In-The-Past Museum”.

The intellectual result is forming of understanding and perception of industrial past not as a problem but as background for transformation in different spheres, especially as potential of transformation of abandoned industrial space into art/culture spaces with respect to people and city history.

The project got resonance in social networks, articles and reports in local media and all-Ukrainian internet-resource on contemporary arts mitec.ua.
